Angaben zur Gattung

• Typusart: Apatelodes dorrace Herbin & Mielke, 2018 [Originalbezeichnung]
• Etymologie: The generic name is a tribute to the Kawésqar people. The Kawésqar, also known as the Alacalufe, Kaweskar, Alacaluf or Halakwulup, are indigenous people who live in Chilean Patagonia. Their traditional language Kawésqar is endangered because few native speakers survive. As well as other native peoples of the Americas, the Kawéskar were seen and treated by colonisers as non-human animals. In 1881, European anthropologists took 11 Kawéskar people from Patagonia to be exhibited in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris and the Berlin Zoological Garden. Only four survived to return to Chile. Early in 2010, the remains of five of the seven who died in Europe were repatriated from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where they had been held for studies (Harambour and Barrena Ruiz 2019).
