• Etymologie: The generic name is a tribute to the nameless indigenous called Tibira, a Tupi term used to designate those who did not fit into Western standards of sexuality. The murder of Tibira is the first detailed record of homophobia in Brazilian territory. Tibira was persecuted and tortured in 1614, under the order of the French missionary Yves d'Évreux, of the Capuchin Order, for the practice of ‘sodomy’. According to d’Évreux, Tibira appeared ‘more of a man on the outside’ but is ‘hermaphrodite’ and has ‘a woman’s voice’. This act occurred with the consent of the Catholic Church on a mission in Brazil. Tibira was tied alive in the mouth of a cannon installed in the Fort of São Luís in Maranhão. When those present threw fire, part of the body of Tibira fell on the land, and the rest was released and disappeared into the sea: Indigenous and homosexual, Tibira from Maranhão was executed in 1614, with a cannonball, by those who made Brazil a subservient colony, and whose objective was to decimate the original peoples, end their cultures and deprive them of any pride they had of themselves [Dr Célia Xakriabá].
